Al Taweelah

Emirates Global Aluminium’s Al Taweelah site is located in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD), approximately halfway between the cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Our smelter at Al Taweelah was built in two phases. The first began production in 2009, and the second in 2013. Al Taweelah was the largest single-site smelter in the world when completed.

EGA’s Al Taweelah site was the first in the Middle East to achieve certification to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative Performance Standards, the aluminium industry’s internationally-recognised standard for environmental and social performance and governance.

The whole site is five times bigger than Abu Dhabi’s Al Maryah Island at six square kilometres.

All our reduction cells at Al Taweelah use our own technology, which was developed by EGA in the United Arab Emirates.

Once smelted, liquid aluminium is transferred to our casthouse to be made into products that meet our customers’ specifications. Our casthouse at Al Taweelah has nine casting stations.

We also transfer liquid metal to nearby customers in Al Taweelah via a dedicated hot metal road, which eliminates the need to use high energy to remelt the aluminium before use. This saves both costs and environmental emissions.

We have our own power plant at Al Taweelah, to generate the electricity we need for our operations, with nine gas turbines and four steam turbines.

Al Taweelah also has a desalination plant to meet our water needs. It has a capacity of 3.75 million gallons (approximately 17,000 cubic metres) of potable water per day.

We have a carbon plant at Al Taweelah to manufacture carbon anodes, which are required in the smelting process.

We have a dedicated berth at Khalifa Port. Raw materials are transferred along a five-kilometre long offshore belt conveyor and transfer tower system to our storage facilities on site. Some raw materials are transferred from elsewhere in the port by truck.

We can store 210,000 tonnes of alumina at Al Taweelah, and 50,000 tonnes of calcined petroleum coke.
